The plan of the principal buildings in place until the reign of James IV evolved around three open spaces and exploited a series of natural building lines in turn defined by natural bedrock terracing. In this report an attempt will be made to divide the results of the various excavations in and around the Ladies’ Lookout into a single coherent account. A total of ten trenches were excavated in the area of the Ladies’ Lookout: Trenches 9 – 12, 14, 16 and 18 – 21.
