About Us

Support our work

Play a role in preserving and enhancing Scotland’s historic environment by donating to the Historic Scotland Foundation.

1 Overview

Play a role in preserving and enhancing Scotland’s heritage by making a donation to the Historic Scotland Foundation.

The Historic Scotland Foundation is an independent charity established in 2001 to support our work.

Each donation and legacy made to the Foundation helps us to:

  • maintain, enhance and preserve Scotland’s built heritage
  • fund educational and interpretational activities at historic sites across Scotland
  • promote Scotland’s built heritage in new and exciting ways

The Foundation helps Historic Environment Scotland to carry out work which could not otherwise be funded as part of our day-to-day activity.

2 How to donate

Individuals, companies, grant-making trusts and other organisations can all donate to the Historic Scotland Foundation. If you’re a UK taxpayer, your donation to the Foundation is eligible for Gift Aid, increasing the value of your donation by 25%.

You can also leave a legacy to the Historic Scotland Foundation in your will. Legacies are exempt from inheritance tax, and a legacy of 10% or more of your estate to the Foundation will reduce the amount of inheritance tax payable on the rest of your estate from 40% to 36%.

You can make a general donation to the Foundation, or you can select a particular project for support. It’s best to talk to the Foundation about what options are available – contact us for more information.

3 Previous projects

Donations and legacies have funded all kinds of work across Scotland. Previous examples include:

  • a major project at Stirling Castle to create a replica set of 15th-century Flemish tapestries for the royal apartments, and the Royal Palace refurbishment
  • community education projects at Trinity House, Leith
  • important state-of-the-art digitisation and imaging work at properties across Scotland
  • support for Iona Abbey, Inchcolm Abbey and Edzell Castle gardens
  • enhancement of the One o’Clock Gun exhibition at Edinburgh Castle
  • environmental studies at Maeshowe, Orkney
