What we do

The Environment and Forestry Directorate protects and enhances Scotland’s natural environment.

We are responsible for:

  • land­scapes, biodiversity, woodlands, water and soil
  • policies on the management of natural heritage and protected sites and access
  • the protection of species and wildlife management
  • the protection of land, water and air quality
  • promoting a circular economy through resource and waste management and reduction
  • flood risk man­agement
  • funding environmental and agricultural scientific research and economic and statistical analysis
