Regeneration

Regeneration is the process of reversing the economic, physical and social decline of places.

We are reforming the way resources are invested in disadvantaged communities and accelerating the pace of change through focused funding and other support mechanisms.

Actions

Our support for regeneration falls into the following categories:

• community-led regeneration, delivered through the Empowering Communities Fund
• the Place Principle
• town centre regeneration including the Town Centre Fund
• capital investment
• Business Improvement Districts (BIDs)
• social inclusion and poverty reduction

Background

Our regeneration strategy, 'Achieving a sustainable future', provides the framework for local action to tackle area inequality, create opportunities and improve communities.

Bills and legislation

The Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act 2015 came into force in 2015 and gives community bodies new rights, and public sector authorities new duties, to boost community empowerment and engagement.

Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) came into force in Scotland in 2007 as a result of primary legislation in Part 9 of the Planning etc. (Scotland) Act 2006 and other secondary legislation, including UK parliamentary regulations to implement reserved aspects of the policy.
