Battlefield School Visits Subsidy

Find out how to apply for the Battlefield School Visits Subsidy, worth up to £2,000 per visit.

Secondary schools can get help with the cost of making a visit to any First World War Western Front battlefield site. A Scottish Government Battlefield School Visits Subsidy offers up to £2,000 per visit and is available up to and including the 2018–19 school year.

The scheme is part of the Scottish Government’s five-year WWI Commemorative Programme to mark the centenary of the First World War. Its aim is to help pupils develop their understanding of the causes of the First World War and its impact on people’s lives.

Any Scottish secondary school can apply for a subsidy. Funding is limited, however, and priority will be given to schools in areas with high indicators of multiple deprivation (see Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation).

Application criteria:

  • the visit must be booked in advance and for a genuine educational purpose
  • subsidy applications should be made before the visit
  • all claims must be made within one month of the visit date

The scheme aims to provide a one-off subsidy payment to a school for a single battlefield visit (normally in term time). Applications for a second subsidy won’t normally be accepted. Remote schools with greater travel costs may get a further subsidy.

The school decides how to distribute a subsidy.

Schools are encouraged to share their learning experiences as part of the WWI Commemorative Programme. School visit details will be shared with Education Scotland to help this happen.

How to apply

1. Make a booking by contacting the site or the organisation you’ll use to manage your visit.
2. Complete and return to us (by email or post) the subsidy application form.

Wartime sites

A number of our sites played a critical role in the war effort. Visiting these properties gives pupils a chance to reflect on their battlefield visit and learn about how war was experienced at home in Scotland.
