Archives and Research

Compare modern-day land use and past land use across Scotland using this interactive online map.

Compare modern-day land use and past land use across Scotland to explore our historic environment in detail.

HLAmap is an interactive online map, created through our research, that lets you see how evidence survives for a particular area of interest across broad time frames or specific historic periods.

You can also turn on and off layers that highlight nationally recorded heritage assets, listed buildings and scheduled monuments.

Pre-set maps are also available for those involved in:

  • forestry, farming and land management
  • development and planning
  • landscape and strategic planning
