Resource update: From Bump to Breastfeeding DVD

A decision has been made to move to universal promotion of online information and video clips and a more targeted distribution of the DVD.

The ‘From Bump to Breastfeeding’ DVD is currently included in the Early Years Information Pathway for distribution by a Midwife or Family Nurse at 22-25 weeks.  There is also reference to the resource in the Universal Health Visiting Pathway at 32-34 pre-birth contact, for a health professional to signpost to it. The video content is designed to enable mothers to make a supported choice to breastfeed.

Online information can be accessed on the FeedGood website to help families make an informed choice on a range of feeding topics and includes several video clips. The full set of DVD video clips are also available online at the Best Beginnings website:

The information can also be found in the Ready Steady Baby! print guide.

Consultation with 12 local NHS Boards through the Scottish Infant Feeding Advisor Network (SIFAN) during 2015-16 (unpublished report available upon request), revealed limited use of the DVD by parents and a number of issues with awareness and distribution of the resource.  In response to this, and as part of establishing more efficient ways of distributing resources, the Redesigning Health Information for Parents (ReHIP) Project Board decided to limit availability of the DVD to cover targeted rather than universal distribution across Scotland, and encourage access to the on-line video clips and information.  This is consistent with the Scottish Government’s ‘Digital First’ Strategy, whilst ensuring access to hard copies remain for those who need them.  We plan to recommend that the Universal Health Visiting Pathway is amended accordingly.

We therefore request all NHS Boards to:

  • Promote the on-line content during consultations with expectant and new mums
  • Distribute the DVD to pregnant women who are considered by a health professional to have literacy issues, or would benefit from receiving the information in an audio/visual format or alternative language
  • Distribute the DVD to pregnant women assessed by a health professional as having limited digital access/data allowance and/or limited smartphone or computer access
  • Use the video content as a training and awareness raising tool in group and 1:1 sessions with pregnant women.

The above request should be implemented with immediate effect.
