ukactive has launched a new consultation that will help to shape the future of children’s physical activity across the UK. The consultation will focus on developing opportunities in three key areas: the organisations and institutions that children and young people experience, the physical environment that children and young people grow up in and the social environment that children interact with. ukactive wants written evidence which captures the views of children, young people, parents, teachers, activity providers, social workers, policy experts, business leaders, healthcare professionals and anyone else with a stake in children’s health to help plot the next chapter in the health of Britain’s children. How do we address the low numbers of women travelling actively in the UK?

Gender inequality remains a big issue when it comes to active travel in the UK, says Sustrans. The charity has published a new report, ‘Are We Not There Yet?, revealing that women’s journeys around cities are typically shorter than men’s, use different modes of transport and are more likely to involve ‘trip-chaining’ (multi-stop journeys) which tend to be for a balance of child care, work and household responsibilities. While women are motivated to travel actively for physical and mental health reasons, worries about their personal safety, convenience (particularly when taking multi-stop trips) and appearance are all barriers to preventing them from cycling and walking, says the report. It looked at the travel habits and choices of nearly 2,000 women in Glasgow and combined the findings with a literature review of research on women’s travel patterns across Scotland, the UK and Europe. The report also highlighted that few women are involved in creating transport policy and planning in the UK. Currently, transport has the lowest percentage of women in senior posts within the public sector in Scotland, with women representing only 6.25% heads of transport bodies. In addition, the transport sector accounts for only 22% of female workers UK-wide. Read the full report here:

Sport protects mental health of children who experience trauma

Taking part in sport protects children who are abused or neglected from developing mental health problems in later life, according to a major public health study. People who had adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) but regularly played sports as children were less likely to have a mental illness as an adult, the study found. People who had traumatic childhoods were also more likely to be mentally healthy if they took part in sport as adults. The study confirmed a strong link between ACEs, which include sexual and physical abuse, parental separation and living with domestic violence, and mental illness as an adult. It said people who had four or more ACEs were four times more likely to be receiving treatment for current mental illnesses and 10 times more likely to have self-harmed or felt suicidal than those who had experienced none. Children’s engagement with the outdoors and sports activities

This latest release from the Office for National Statistics provides an analysis of the UK Time Use Survey. This looks at the amount of time children spend engaging with the outdoors and sports activities. Key findings • Children aged 8 to 15 years in the UK spent just over an hour (68 minutes) of their leisure time on average per day taking part in an outdoor activity, sports-related activity or travelling on foot or by bicycle. • Children spent three times longer on sports and exercise activities (33 minutes) than entertainment and culture activities (11 minutes). • Boys spent on average 40 minutes per day on sports activities compared with 25 minutes for girls. • The average amount of leisure time children spent in parks, countryside, seaside, beach or coastal locations was 16 minutes per day. • Children reported greater enjoyment ratings when taking part in entertainment and culture activities (6.4 out of 7) and sports and exercise activities (6.3) than for other outdoor activities. Best buys for preventing NCDs

The World Health Organization has released a list of ‘Best Buys’ and recommended interventions to address non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The best buy for physical activity is considered to be the implementation of community-wide public education and awareness campaigns for physical activity which include mass media campaigns combined with other community-based education, motivational and environmental programmes aimed at supporting behavioural change of physical activity levels. Other cost effective interventions include the provision of physical activity counselling and referral as part of routine primary health care services through the use of brief interventions. The list also contains recommended interventions that have not been subject to a cost analysis. The report contains 88 interventions for: the four key behavioural risk factors for NCDs - tobacco, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity four key disease areas - cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory disease.

UK physical activity guidelines review

The current UK physical activity guidelines were published by the Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) in 2011 and offer evidence-based recommendations for physical activity related health outcomes. A review will be conducted to provide updated practical public health guidelines and develop potential implementation pathways for all groups, from healthcare to communication professionals. Over the next 12 months, six Expert Working Groups (EWGs) will work with key national stakeholders to review the current guidelines and present new recommendations to the four UK CMOs based upon the latest scientific evidence. The groups will comprise of UK and international experts in the field, and will reflect on the four age ranges of UK physical activity guidelines (under 5s, children and young people aged 6 to 18, adults aged 19 to 64 and older adults aged 65 plus). A new CMO Expert Working Group for sedentary behavior across the life course and a CMO Expert Guidelines Implementation and Surveillance Working Group will also be formed. Read more below:

Planning Cities to boost Physical Activity

A new publication - Towards More Physical Activity in Cities - from the World Health Organization/Europe is offering guiding principles to help countries transform urban settings and public spaces to promote physically active lifestyles. It explores options and strategies to boost physical activity in cities and advocates urban planning as a means to prevent physical inactivity. The report discusses options for improving the physical infrastructure and spaces in cities and towns to transform the quality of public spaces and encourage more physical activity. The report offers an analysis of existing initiatives designed to boost physical activity in cities, aiming to move such initiatives forward. It also focuses on recent case studies of urban planning to promote physical activity. It specifically explores examples from parts of Europe that have been less studied, and aims to demonstrate how common principles and concepts in urban planning can be used to encourage greater levels of physical activity.

Sustrans study shows people in cities want segregated space for cycling

The Bike Life study is run every two years by cycling and walking charity Sustrans and seven major cities. Sustrans’ Bike Life 2017, the UK’s biggest assessment of cycling in cities, reveals four in five people (78%) want more protected bike routes built to make cycling safer, even when this could mean less space for other road traffic. The Bike Life study is run every two years by cycling and walking charity Sustrans and seven major cities: Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Greater Manchester and Newcastle. Inspired by the Copenhagen Bicycle Account, it looks at progress across infrastructure, travel habits, public attitudes and the impact of cycling more widely. Bike Life shows that most people living in these cities think cycling is a good thing. Out of the thousands of residents interviewed, sixty four per cent said they would cycle more if on-road cycle routes physically separated from traffic and pedestrians were available. And over two-thirds think their city would be a better place to live and work if more people cycled. You can find out more below:

The survey will help them to identify barriers that prevent families from walking to school. ‘Rate Your Walk’ is an online tool that enables families to comment on their walk to school. Sported and Women in Sport launch a new ‘sport for change’ programme

Sported and Women in Sport have come together to launch a new Sport for Change programme to help girls in the most deprived areas of the UK to fulfil their potential by opening up access to sport. The programme is funded by Comic Relief as part of its Levelling the Field initiative. The joint programme seeks to help community sport groups in deprived areas of Scotland, South West England and the West Midlands. It aims to tackle gender stereotypes by improving the sport offering for girls and women and better meeting their needs. The community groups will benefit from expert workshops, gaining insights from Women in Sport’s research into the values and motivations that guide girls’ decision making, and how to apply these to the design, delivery and marketing of tailored sports activities. Each group will be supported by Sported volunteer mentors and regional managers for six months to embed the insights from the training and develop a business plan with a focus on girls’ engagement and inclusion. Additionally, nine girls from across the project will be identified as peer influencers. The girls will be coached and supported by Women in Sport to encourage their female peers to participate in sport and expand their aspirations. Read more below:

Physical activity outside of school is vital for child health

Physical activity outside of school is vital for child health, and could play a vital role in helping children meet government recommendations, according to new research funded in Bristol. The researchers found that children who do activity outside of school in addition to during school hours are much more likely to meet the Government’s physical activity guidelines. The results, published in BMJ Open, suggest that current efforts to increase exercise during the school day won’t be enough for children to meet the recommended one hour of physical activity a day, set by the Chief Medical Officer.

2017 European Week of Sport

The European Week of Sport takes place between 23rd and 30th September and aims to support and promote the benefits of an active lifestyle. The week is based on a key message to be active, using grassroots initiatives to inspire people to take part in regular activity and create opportunities in people’s everyday lives to be happier and healthier through physical activity. Three themed days will take place: • Saturday 23rd: Outdoors - A focus on the benefits and use of green space to get active. • Sunday 24th: Sports Clubs - Open days and taster sessions to increase participation at local clubs. • Monday 25th - Mindful: A focus on the benefits of physical activity on mental wellbeing. More physical activity at school can boast academic performance

Physical activity is associated with many physical and mental health benefits, however many children do not meet the national physical activity guidelines. While schools provide an ideal setting to promote children’s physical activity, adding physical activity to the school day can be difficult given time constraints often imposed by competing key learning areas. Classroom-based physical activity may provide an opportunity to increase school-based physical activity while concurrently improving academic-related outcomes. The primary aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the impact of classroom-based physical activity interventions on academic-related outcomes. A secondary aim was to evaluate the impact of these lessons on physical activity levels over the study duration.
