Chief Nursing Officer Directorate

What we do

We seek to achieve the best health and care outcomes for people by working on patient, public and health professions policy, and support ministers and the NHS in delivering a safe, effective and person-centred health and social care system.

We are responsible for:

  • providing policy advice for ministers
  • leading the nursing, midwifery, allied health professions (NMAHP) and Health Care Science (HSC) workforce
  • the care of older people and improving dementia care in hospitals and other NHS settings
  • modernising and improving NMAHP and HCS care services and standards of practice
  • developing the capacity and capabilities of the NMAHP and HCS workforce to meet policy priorities
  • leading on all aspects of healthcare associated infection policy and antimicrobial resistance
  • leading on health professionals and workforce regulation
